Your role:
Vanderbilt University Medical Center is a world-renown academic medical center with 60 Operating Rooms in our adult surgery suite. We are seeking a Sterile Processing Department Educator. This is a new position to deliver training and facilitate excellence as we develop this function for the first time. This person will create curriculum and evaluate the impact of their CSP educational program through measurable outcomes. Will develop and maintain training programs for all CSP and Endo staff. Coordinate and document competency records and maintain all certification records for all CSP and Endoscopy staff. Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise programs of orientation, in-service training, workshops, and continuing education. Perform a range of clinical, consultative and educational activities within the Perioperative and Central Sterile Processing areas.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Creates and evaluates new policies, protocols, or procedures as demanded by new rules, guidelines, standards, or equipment purchases dictate in conjunction with management
- Develops and implements interactive, scenario-based learning programs for sterile processing related responsibilities
- Conducts and incorporates an annual needs assessment for competency of staff. Assesses the competency and evaluates the proficiency of the of sterile processing staff
- Provides guidance for sterile processing certifications and continuing education units for certification renewals
- Revises and updates on-line course work, competencies, etc. based on departmental changes that are in line with new regulations
- Provides individualized orientation and education for all instrument care and CSPD staff in conjunction with the Perioperative Education staff
- Assists with new hire orientation for the sterile processing departments
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) and 5 years relevant experience
- Certification as a surgical technologist or sterile processing technician
- Accredited certification program such as the CBSPD sterilization certification or CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) or Certification for IAHCSMM CHL (Certification in Healthcare Leadership)
Preferred:
- Experience creating curriculum for a Central Sterile Processing Education Program

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES:
MATERIAL PROCESSING (EXPERT): Efficiency in working a series of steps to complete a process. Understanding what it takes to run machinery and the parameters for washing and sterilizing equipment.

Has mastered the ability to constructively give positive and negative feedback. Department Summary
The Perioperative Services Department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center performs more than 48,000 surgeries in 60 operating rooms. We have 3 Ambulatory Surgery Sites and 3 in house surgical suites. As a level 1 trauma center, some of the most complex and challenging surgeries in the nation are performed here.
Our Sterile processing department is comprised of two locations that work together to ensure high quality instruments needs are met for patients and surgeons. With the use of our instrument tracking system, we excel in the preparation of reusable instrumentation and equipment for clinical and surgical procedures across the entire campus. Services include but not limited to Robotic, Endoscopic, Laparoscopic, Cardiac, Trauma, Neuro, Spine, Orthopedic, Ear Nose and Throat, Plastics, Ophthalmology, Vascular, Donor, and transplant services.
